On 16 October 2024, Forward Ability Support’s Registered Nurses and Clinical Nurse Consultants took part in a hands-on workshop to further their knowledge and skills in treating lymphoedema in people with spinal cord injuries. The workshop was led by Emily Muldoon, an expert from Swell Therapies, who shared her extensive experience in managing this complex condition.
Lymphoedema, a chronic condition caused by the build-up of lymph fluid, poses unique challenges for people with SCI. Impaired motor function and reduced mobility can worsen the condition, making it crucial for healthcare professionals to implement tailored treatment approaches. Forward Ability Support’s nursing team is dedicated to improving the quality of life for their clients, and this training marks an important step in achieving that goal.
The workshop featured an invaluable learning experience when a resident from Ferguson Lodge volunteered as a real-life example, allowing nurses to observe how lymphoedema presents in people with SCI. This hands-on training enabled them to apply the specialised techniques they were learning in a practical setting.
Key areas covered in the workshop included manual lymphatic drainage, the use of compression garments, skin care, and exercises to help improve fluid circulation. By gaining practical experience in these techniques, Forward’s nursing staff is now better equipped to deliver holistic, personalised care to clients with lymphoedema, helping to manage symptoms and improve overall wellbeing.
Forward Ability Support remains committed to ensuring that its clinical team stays at the forefront of best practices in supporting people with spinal cord injuries.
